Seats are designed to withstand the force of a crash, so they are very strong. The limit is more the width of the seat. A standard domestic economy seat is generally about 17 inches wide, rising to 17.5-18.5 inches for international economy, and 20/21 inches for business and first class.

A person weighing much more than 280 pounds would struggle to comfortably fit into an economy seat.
