Not much, if any. It'll take years before a single drop shows up at the pumps.
And then there's the (rather silly) political point of view:
Yes, because there will be more fuel... more fuel... less $ at the pump.
Also, we will not be buying from other foreign countries... that's good.
The only reason not to support offshore drilling is to "save the wild life".
Unless you are an environmentalist... you should support offshore drilling.

There are always inherent dangers in any industrial operation. If we are looking for zero risk, no one would be able to drive to work or even walk. The real issue is if there is any logical reason to slow down off shore drilling and create the issues of higher costs of fuel and less ability to feed and allow transportation on our planet. With every action, there is a reaction. If we fail to allow drilling off our shore by America, other countries will do so. China is currently drilling where we have banned our companies from drilling. This has caused higher fuel prices at home and more expensive food costs. It also increases the risk of a leak as China does not have the same safety standards we impose. We simply have no reason to not drill as the risk of not drilling far exceeds the risks of drilling.

Ok, I'm an enviromentalist. There are just so many issues about offshore drilling. You know when you see all of the pretty white sand beaches in the brochures for tropical places and you'd kill just to go there? Yeah, well imagine all of those pretty coral reefs, the happy little sparkly tropical fish, and all of the magnificent sea turtles, dolphins, and the animals of this deep blue sea...gone. The relaxing clear water and the white sugar like sand completley black. It's like when you're in a parking lot on a rainy day and you see all of the pretty little swirly rainbow patterns in the puddles, yeah, sure, they're pretty, but only for a moment. Imagine that oil pattern over the ocean. If you're still not convinced tht offshore drilling is bad, think of the health hazards! no surfing, boogie boarding, or skim boarding for the world, and you can kiss relaxing on the waves goodbye. Yeah, Ok, the gas prices will go down but we can ride bikes too you know. We're really selfish sometimes, us Americans. im
How do oil rigs function?
There are basically 2 types of rigs. 1) Drilling Rig The function of this rig is drilling a well down to the production zone then installs a casing in it. There are various types for offshore drilling and there are types for onshore drilling. 2) Production Platform (Offshore) The function of this rig is for producing oil. It consists of not only a single well like on an onshore pad, but I have seen platforms with 20 to 50 wells. They are not drilled straight down like most onshore wells, but they are deviated and get drilled in and arc, away from the platform and ends up being somewhat horizontal. Wells can be anything from 1000+ and up to a few thousand feet deep. A work-over rig on the platform uses equipment to perforate the casing at the desired production zone and a screen is installed to minimize sand flowing into the well. Pumps are installed into wells to produce the oil. Depending on how far the platform is located from land, a pipe line can tranport the oil to land or in most cases where platforms are to far offshore, the surrounding platforms pump the oil to a FPSO which is basically a huge oil tanker that transfers oil to oil tanker ships. Onshore operations are different. A well is drilled and a wellhead is installed. Piping from the wellhead leads to a manifold which is connected to the surrounding wells. From there oil gets pumped to gathering stations then to refineries.
