My local dealer tells me $1300. Try what In am doing with my 2000 Forester right as we speak: K&W Nanotechnology Permanent Head Gasket and Block Repair. (available at Auto Zone) This is made by CRC and they do stand behind it. (I am in no way affilliated with CRC or Auto Zone except as a customer.) My problem is a leak from the combustion chamber into the cooling system, a very difficult breach to repair. Finished up the second treatment yesterday (first one failed after a week) and I am hopeful. I don't want to spend $1300 either.
It is not possible to repair the actual head gasket. Repair of a blown head gasket is to replace the gasket.
You cannot repair a blown head gasket, you must remove the heads and replace the gasket.
You shouldn't need to "bleed" the radiator in your Forester. If you top off the coolant in the radiator the next time you check the top of your radiator is empty again? You have a blown head gasket. Voice of experience here. --Ken
