How much will it cost to replace a head gasket on your 95 cougar?

If you're lucky, you might be able to get it done for about $850. If there's ANY damage caused by engine overheating though, this number goes up dramaticly. I advise planning at least $1,000 for this type of repair ($1,500 if you anticipate other problems). Also, this will take about a week to do, as it requires ripping appart the whole engine. Remember, you'll need to change the head gasket itself, plus the spark plugs (as these will get fouled by any contaminants), and at least 2 changes of coolant, and 2 of oil. This assumes you don't have warped cylinder heads of bent valves, and that nothing breaks in the process. Got to love that Ford 3.8L V6 design! Honestly, if you can afford to, I'd advise dumping the Cougar. They purr nice when they behave, but the claws come out and sink into your check book very quickly when anything goes wrong (speaking from experience here).
