Cherry wood is a little bit more elegant than other more common types of wood. It is darker in color, and just looks much nicer and more expensive than say oak or maple.
Wood is typically cheaper than charcoal or propane so in that case it would be more cost effective. You can get wood cheap at grocery stores or specific lots that only sell wood.

I would recommend looking on Craig's List for a used tank (15-20 gallon). It would be better to let natural light in, also much more sanitary. Wood is porous and would absorb your pet's waste, where as a glass tank can be cleaned and washed out when needed.

Pellet stoves are wood burning stoves. They are very efficient and wood-burning is much more wallet friendly. You can choose to buy wood, which is still cheaper than fuel, or you can chop it yourself for no cost.
