Breadlines and soup kitchens were a common sight during the Great Depression. These soup kitchens and breadlines were commonly run by charities and church organizations. They handed out warm meals and bread to people in need. The lines to such places were at times miles long.

Hoovervilles were "houses" made out of newspapers and other things during the Great Depression. They got their name from the previous president Hoover who promised that the Great Depression wouldn't last and that things would improve... nothing did and the Great Depression did last and didn't improve, instead it worsened.

Hoovervilles were shanty towns that people were forced to live in because they could not afford any proper accomodation during the Great Depression. They were named after President Hoover who was President of the US at the beginning of the Great Depression. Hoover was replaced by Franklin D Roosevelt because he was regarded as a 'do nothing President' meaning he did not put proper measures in place to help the USA out of the Great Depression.
