It really should be changed every 30,000 miles. It is cheaper than a transmission overhaul.
The 2002 Ford Escape has a 5-speed manual.

The filter is inside the case. It is not serviceable unless you do a overhaul. You should change your fluid every 30,000 miles and install a in line filter right away to save your transmission. In line filters are around $15-$30 and should only take an hour to install. That's what I did to mine.

The 2002 Pontiac Prix GT is equipped with the 4T65E automatic transmission. A complete overhaul, or pan filter replacement followed by fluid flush will require approximately 10-quarts of automatic transmission fluid (AF). The newest ATF specification compatible for this GM transmission is Dexron VI.

I have a 2002 Moutianeer, and not to long ago had a problem with the shifting. It would struggle, then shift real hard into 2nd. I had to have a tramsmission overhaul done. Thank God it was under warrenty.
Probably just a service. Get a deal. Go for a 'free' inspection with an option to service or overhaul/repair
