It depends on the model of BMW you have. I have a 1997 528I and a non BMW repair shop quoted me 1000 euro or about 1400 dollars. This is in Germany were it is easier to get parts and cheaper. i would say on average in the us you should expect to pay about 1000 to 1400 dollars if you have a in-line 6 BMW. The labor is going to be the most expensive thing because it is about a 10 hour job. I hope this will help you out.

Bit of a tricky one ... It all depends on the condition of the cylinder head. If the cylinder head is warped then replacing the head gasket won't solve your problem. A warped cylinder head can be skimmed (if not too badly warped). If the cylinder head is badly warped then it would be much easier to replace the head than fit another engine.
