During the warm, longer days of spring and summer a mare will go into season or estrus every 2 to 4 weeks until she gets pregnant or cold weather sets in. For several months when days are short and the weather is chilly her cycles may go dormant or may be less noticeable. This can vary with individuals and is never set in stone.
Mares will come into season when the days start getting longer, about February or March in the northern hemisphere. They will have one or two false heats where they don't ovulate then will be fertile until about July or August when they will go into seasonal anestrus until the next early spring.
Horses only come into season when they want to so sometimes they won't come into season at all.
