Bearing in mind that these drugs have only been around for a little more than a decade, the honest answer is that we do not really know for sure. What we do know is that these drugs, where they are freely available, dramatically cut the incidence of AIDS and that advanced medical modelling techniques now indicate that a near normal life expectancy should be realistic goal of timely treatment. That is not to say that life on HIV drugs is a breeze. They are expensive, take a great deal of commitment and the side effects can be numerous and unpleasant, so these drugs should not be seen as a cause for complacency. Even if one treatment eventually fails, there will normally be other treatment options and newer drugs becomming available. No single treatment should ever be thought of as your final treatment.

If controlled, HIV symptoms can be manageable and almost impossible to detect. A large number of people don't realize they have HIV because they show little to no symptoms. With proper care, especially with all of the research, you could mange it quite well. You could also live a long, healthy life.

The average life expectancy after HIV+ diagnosis in the United States is 28 years. That's definitely dependent on a lot of factors. People may live much longer depending on the availability of medical services and their ability to remain adherent.
