An Irish parliament's term is 5 years, but an election can happen before that. Not all parliaments run their full term, so elections often happen sooner than that. There were 3 general elections in 18 months in the early 1980s.

A presidential term is 7 years and a president can serve two successive terms. If there is no other candidate a president can be elected unopposed, so there is not always a presidential election.

Local government elections are fixed at every 5 years, as are elections to the European Parliament.
