There is no "one-size-fits-all" vaccination program for horses. The recommendations vary depending on geographic location, age of horse, type of vaccines recommended, use of the horse and other factors. Horses generally require vaccines of some type at least yearly. Horse owners should consult their veterinarian and discuss the specifics of their horse's care and use to determine what vaccinations are appropriate and how often they should be given.

The required vaccinations for horses vary in different areas of th world. In the United States, the American Association of Equine Practitioners has designated Eastern and Western Equine Encephalytis, West Nile Virus, Tetanus and Rabies as "Core" vaccinations. This means that the AAEP believes that all horses in the US should be vaccinated against these diseases yearly. There are several other vaccinations that are considered "risk based" vaccinations, meaning that they should be given based upon the horse's risk of exposure. Risk factors can include geographic location, age and use of the horse and management of the horse. Horse owners should contact their local veterinarian to discuss the recommended vaccinations for their area and situation.

That depends on the geographic location of the horse, use of the horse, age of the horse, previous reaction to vaccines, concurrent medical conditions and the diseases that a horse needs to be vaccinated against because of those different risk factors. Because there is no "one-size-fits-all" vaccination program for horses, you should always contact your veterinarian to discuss the specifics of your horse's situation and formulate and appropriate vaccination program for the individual horse.

Core vaccinations are those recommended for all horses in the US: Eastern and Western Equine Encephalitis, Tetanus, Rabies and West Nile. These are recommended to be given yearly, though in some situations boosters may be recommended more often.

Risk-based vaccines for horses in the US are: Influenza, Equine Herpes Virus, Strangles, Potomac Horse Fever, Botulism, etc. These vaccines are recommended based on the risk of a horse being exposed to the causative agent of the disease. Horses may need to be vaccinated as frequently as every 3 months for certain diseases or as infrequently as yearly for others.

$10 to $25 per vaccination is average if you buy them from your local feed store. If you have your vet give the shots you will pay for each vaccination plus a ranch call to have him out to your horse's location.

As mentioned the cost will vary according to your location and the reason you need the vet to look at the horse. Surgery will be more expensive than a regular check-up and any time anesthesia is involved the price will go up as well.

The cost of vet care varies based upon location, whether you haul your horse to the veterinarian or he has to come to your horse and exactly what services you want performed. The best way to find out the cost of vet care in your area and in your situation is to contact local veterinarians and ask for estimates.

The details vary from country to country (and from region to region within a country), so you better ask a few local veterinarians for details.
