Not very common but can happen. Perhaps 1 out of 50??
Your alternator is probably rebuilt and not really new. I have had this problem several times and I have bought a new battery and alternator. The alternator keeps your battery charged and powers your electrical system, so even when driving you can lose all power in the car from the alternator draining your battery. Take the battery and alternator to an auto store and they will test both for free. Ask them about the difference in a rebuilt alternator and a brand new one. This is a very common problem.
You can buy a Bosch rebuilt alternator from your auto supply store. Generally they cost around the $100 - $200 range.
The best way to fix an alternator is to replace it with a rebuilt one from the auto parts store.
You can buy a rebuilt one at almost any auto parts store in parts dept.
The diagram to the alternator of a 1988 Sedan Deville can be found in the cars repair manual. It can be bought at an auto part store.
most typically it's a bad diode in the alternator, even if it's an after-market rebuilt alternator from your local auto parts store, may have to cowboy up and get one from the dealer
have the alternator tested. I bought a cheap tester that you plug into the cigarette lighter that tells me whether the alternator is charging. I got this at the auto parts store 7T77T7
If you can get a rebuild kit for the alternator and have the necessary pullers and can solder in the diodes rebuilding is simply removal and replacement of the parts. I recommend you simply exchange the alternator for a rebuilt unit at your FLAPs (friendly local auto parts store) it is easier and cheaper in the long run. Also there is a website that has a slew of alternator and starter instructions. They are called star-alt
Bakery bread often contains less preservatives than that in a store.
Yes. and it will cost around $130.00 at the parts store. it also requires alot of skill to replace. it is soldered in and the alternator brushes are also involved. They need to be pinned out of the way to reinstall. Unless you are equipped and have a good working knowledge of alternators you will be better off purchasing a quality rebuilt. a quality rebuilt will cost you around $200.00

typically when you replace your alternator you either replace your battery or completely remove it from the vehicle and charge it so that it is fully charged. The battery loses power when the alternator is too weak to recharge it. You might not have enough voltage going through your engine. try this. answer if it is only coming on at 3,000 rpms, I would suggest you look at your serpentine belt and make suer it is not slipping on the alternator pulley. Your idler pulley spring may be weak and is not keeping the belt tight on the alternator. If you bought the alternator from Pep Boys or AutoZOne I would suggest taking it back and having them test it. I haeve already purchased parts from them, realizing they are rebuilt and not new and have found some defective. I replaced a starter 3 times and had to go to another store to find a good one when I asked Autozone to test them before I took it out of the store. They had a whole batch of bad starters..........just something to think about. If your alternator is brand new, not rebuilt, then one of the diodes inside may be going bad.
