Although the manufacturer may indicate that 5,000 is the proper interval, I like to keep my engine running as clean and as efficiently as possible so I recommend 3,000.
The 3,000 mile interval is too often. That was a recommendation made decades ago by the quick lube industry looking to make a big buck. As for the 03' Highlander the manual specifically states:
7500 mile interval - normal
5000 mile interval - severe duty
It has been proving that changing the oil too often can be harmful in the long run. 3000 miles by to todays oil standards is too often. The absolute sure way to know what interval would be best would be to take a sample of the used oil and send it off for analysis. But I assure you 3000 miles is to soon an interval even without an analysis.
If you can try using Toyota oil. It is just right for 100K engines.
