This depends on your age and other factors. However, as a general rule, children under 18 years old should be examined every 2-4 years. From ages 18-60, people should get an exam every two years. After age 60, the exam should be every year. However, these guidelines change if you are at risk for vision problems.

Routine Eye Exams: Keeping Your Eyes Healthy?

Many people suffer from vision problems. Routine eye exams can detect various problems and even some underlying general health issues that you may not even be aware of. These examinations can often detect many treatable blinding-eye diseases, as well as signs of tumors and other brain anomalies. Everyone should periodically obtain a thorough eye examination, as many diseases of the eye are asymptomatic. Choosing an Eye Doctor If a person’s eyes are healthy and do not need special treatment, the type of eye doctor one chooses for a routine exam is simply of personal preference. However, if you suffer from a medical problem of the eye, such as glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration, it is recommended that you obtain care from a doctor that is highly skilled in the treatment of your individual condition. Many cases requiring medical or surgical care of the eye are attended to by an ophthalmologist. In these instances, your optometrist will refer you to see an ophthalmologist that specializes in the treatment of your particular condition. What to Expect During eye exams, a battery of tests will be given by either your optometrist or ophthalmologist. These tests are used to assess an individual’s vision and their ability to focus and distinguish objects. Most exams begin with the patient reading an eye chart. This test of visual acuity is called the Snellen chart. Examination of the external eye includes inspecting the eyelid and the surrounding tissue. The doctor you have chosen will select the tests for your eyes and explain each one to you as it is being performed. A standard comprehensive eye exam includes common tests such as contact lens evaluation, pediatric eye exams and laser surgery work ups. Eye exams are a very important part of your health care, so it is important that you listen closely and answer all of your doctor’s questions as accurately and as thoroughly as possible. This will aid in the most accurate evaluation and results from your eye exams. Healthy Eyes Eye exams are very important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Adults as well as children can benefit from regular visits to their eye doctor. Your eyes can also benefit from maintaining a nutritious diet filled with the correct vitamins and minerals. Often, some people take over the counter supplements designed with the promotion of eye health in mind. Whatever route someone chooses to keep their eyes healthy, they should always seek the advice of an eye doctor if they encounter anything abnormal and follow up routinely.

Do they offer cheap contact lens exams at Lens Crafters I'm so tired of wearing glasses. I would love to get contacts if it won't cost me too much.?

Prices with Lenscrafter vary by location as they work with independent doctors. Go to http://www.lenscrafters.com/eyeglasses/store-locator-find-lenscrafters-stores-near-you to find the lenscrafter closest to you and they can tell you what the price of an eye exam would be. Also, if you have eye insurance, look into that as well as they often cover eye exams. If you don't have eye coverage, as I personally do not, Lenscrafter is probably going to be one of your cheaper options.

How often should I go to the eye doctor for an exam?

You should go to the eye doctor at least once a year for an eye exam if you have risk factors such as diabetes, eye problems, family history of glaucoma, etc. Those with no concerning issues should have an eye exam every 2-4 years. Those over the age of 65 should have one every 1-2 years. Most optometrists will recommend that you get an eye exam at least once a year but if you are having trouble reading or if your vision is blurred than you should get an exam right away. Typically as you age you should get an exam more often.
