I've been riding bikes for over 30 years and whatever the book says I half that . I've owned 12 or so bikes and never had a single problem other than wear or tear of course. The xjr I bought new about 9 months ago has/will get the same treatment. Actually the book says 12000km and I will do it at 5000km. Beyond this a lot of us know that the topic of oil can be discussed forever.
I also change the filter while I'm there (not in between). 20W50 motul mineral. Will leave it on mineral. (another topic altogether). Bike will click over 9000km today.
Happy riding
