You should clean their cage about once a week. Change the lining every day, or more if needed. If you have more than one parakeet, remember to give them separate bowls so that they don't fight over the food. You should change the food and water every day. ∙ 15y agoI cleaned my gerbils' cage once a week. I owned 3 gerbils and their cage got pretty dirty. If you have more than 3 I would suggest twice a week.

∙ 14y agoYou do not need to clean a gerbil out very often. Only about once every 2 months. This is because a gerbil makes his own bedding by chewing up cardboard and they shouldn't smell very much.

Can you keep a cockatiel in a parakeet cage?
Parakeet cages are generally very small, so I wouldn't recommend it. A rule of thumb is that a bird must have a large enough cage to be able to fully spread his wings, and it must be deep enough so that the bird's tail isn't damaged. Unless the parakeet cage in question is fairly large, then it should be fine. Also remember that the smaller of a cage you buy for your cockatiel, the more out-of-cage time you should provide him.
