OK so I'm a guy and I'm just going to offer a logical answer, OK?
He should text you whenever he has something to say that is worth saying.
If that isn't very often then he probably has little to say to you, so he's probably not a great choice of Boyfriend.
If that is a lot then either he has a great deal of interesting things to say to you and he cares what you think, or he can't shut up and stop bothering you with pointless texts all the time.
Ultimately, you decide how much is too much based not on the amount of texts but by the quality of those texts, and how little is too little my how much you wish he would talk to you more often.
I guess that means its up to you, it's different for everyone, there are no easy answers or one-size-fits-all averages. All anyone can do is tell you how to go about working it out for yourself.
