The virus remain hidden in posterior root ganglion for your life time. When your immunity lowers down, it comes out to give you shingles. When corticosteroids are given for fives days along with the drug acyclovir, the chances of post herpatic neuralgia becomes very less. When it is there the severity is very less. That can be managed by the carbamazepine.

When you install shingles over an old layer of shingles do you have to put down felt or do you put the new layer of shingles directly over the old layer?

With composition shingles, no felt is necessary between shingle layers. When the exposure of the shingles is the same as the old exposure, the bottom edge of the old shingles is used as a guide for the upper edge of the new shingles in placement. This ability to place the shingles would be lost if covered with felt.

Can shingles run in families?

You catch shingles in old age because you had chicken pox as a child. Children catch chicken pox from other children with chicken pox or from old people with shingles. While no one inherits shingles, it may seem that way because children who caught chicken pox from their grandparents with shingles will give chicken pox to their grandchildren when they get old and get shingles unless the grandchildren get a vaccination for chickenpox.
