The horse mentioned in the above answer was named Shayne, he was a Iris draught / Thoroughbred cross and therefore was not a pony, as Pony is a height designation only. That being said Ponies tend to live as long or longer than full sized horses. You can ride a pony of almost any age provided they are sound and healthy.

I would imagine that largely depends on how big the 17 year old is and how big the pony is. A tall heavy 17 year old would obviously be too big for a small pony. It would probably be best to ask advice from a reputable local riding stables.
