Minimum age of criminal responsibility in the UK is 14- after this age, you can be sent to a young offender's institution for committing a serious crime.

If you are under 14 then there's very little that can be done to juvenile offenders unless their crime is VERY serious, i.e. murder, child molestation etc., in which case they can be detained under the Mental Health Act and held in a secure psychiatric unit. Some youngsters have been known to play on this legal anomaly, and use it to get away with some pretty nasty crimes, and there has frequently been much heated debate in the House of Commons about lowering the age of criminal responsibility.

However, in a few cases, summary 'justice' has been meted out to the juvenile offenders by their victim's families, who have beaten them up or even left them permanently injured, and then covered for each other when the police investigate the assault so that nobody can be brought to trial.

This depends on the State and situation, a child as young as 7 has been sentenced to life in prison, which would mean Juvenile Jail until 18 or 21 then State Pen until death.
