Children under the age of 16 may work in South Dakota, with restrictions.

In South Dakota, children under the age of 16 may not be employed in any dangerous occupations. They may not work more than four hours per school day and more than 20 hours per school week and may not work later than 10:00 pm on a school night. They may not work more than 8 hours per non-school day nor more than 40 hours per non-school week.

In addition, children under the age of fourteen may not work during school hours or after 7:00 p.m.

There are some exceptions to these laws, for example: children who work for their parents, children using agricultural equipment, and for child actors.

Federal Laws also apply and are more stringent.

There really isn't a minimum age in South Dakota, however there are restrictions for children under the age of 14 and for children under the age of 16.

Children under the age of 14 can not be employed in any factory or workshop or about any mine, nor be employed in any mercantile establishment except during hours when public schools are not in session and in no case after seven o'clock p.m. They also can not dispense gasoline, gasohol, diesel fuel, and oil at gasoline service establishments.

Children under the age of 16 can not be employed for more than four hours in any school day, twenty hours in any school week, eight hours in any non-school day, forty hours in any non-school week, or after 10 p.m. in any day that precedes a school day.

North Dakota youth employment laws establish a minimum age of 14 to be employed. There are exceptions as to the hours a 14 or 15 year old may work and the types of jobs they can do. A job as a hostess would be allowed.
