Twenty-seven of fifty states in the US, plus the District of Columbia, have a school leaving age of 17 or 18: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. These states represent some two-thirds of the US population, about 207 million citizens (2004). Therefore, a school-leaving age greater than 16 can be considered the norm in the US. Further information can be found in the National Center for Education Statistics Education Digest.
