Female cats can have several litters of kittens a year and it could be hard on her body as she gets older. There are also too many poor little kittens left at roadsides, in boxes outside in the cold because people don't want to take the time to find them homes. ASPCA is over-crowded with unwanted cats and kittens as are many Animal Shelters. It's best to have the female cat spayed or, let her have one litter and then have her spayed.

Answer

You can spay a cat as small as 2 pounds, however 3-4 months is a good age. You will want to spay your animal by 6 months. If a cat goes into heat first, spaying will cost you more at most vets. For both female and male cats, early spaying/neutering will keep your cat from developing spraying habits and aggressive behavior.

if this answer is from the same person, okay...if not...then let me tell you first that you have a nice heart, but you never answer the question at what age. Now, if the 2 pounds answer is the same, okay. thank you, and again you have a nice heart, for letting life continue, at least once.....

5 months or older - there's no age limit after that. Depends on how heavy your cat/kitten is. Like mine could of got it done when she wen't for her boosters but shes only getting it this week.

For females, the general guideline is at about six months, and for males, about five to nine months.

HOWEVER, cats begin to go into heat at different ages. I had one that started going into heat at five months. If this happens -- time to spay!

Also, you want to neuter male cats before they start spraying, as this is a behavior that can continue after neutering if it becomes ingrained. Best to nip 'em early; the neutering procedure is much less invasive than the spay.

It's safe to get them fixed after 8 weeks of age. It is best to neuter or spay the cat before it reaches six months old as most cats reach sexual maturity at that age. Some cats will become sexual mature as early as four or five months.

Most vets like to spay/neuter around 4 to 6 months, but it is safe to spay/neuter healthy cats who weigh at least 2 pounds. If you don't have a regular vet, or can't afford to see one, look for low cost options in your area. There are low cost spay/neuter clinics and coupon programs in many cities.

They have to be at least 8 weeks old to be spayed or neutered. It doesn't have to be done so early, but it should be done sooner rather than later, as studies have shown that cats that are spayed/neutered later are at greater risk for certain serious conditions and diseases, such as Breast cancer.

Also keep in mind that female cats can get pregnant as young as 4 months old, so if there is any chance of her meeting an un-neutered male, she should be spayed early.
