All this generally depends on how healthy your Equine is. Most get worked until they hit there mid 20s. But some earlier, racehorses generally end their racing at 5 or 6 years old. This all just depends on how well the horse is kept, or whenever the owner feels the time is right, and the horse deserves to go out to pasture.

It depends on the horse. You can tell if they start to get out of breath. If it is a race horse you can tell when they start to slow down. They should retire from racing but you can still ride them for years. Most horses will retire in their 20s. Then they should be put out to pasture.

Usually, you can ride a horse at any age, as long as it's healthy and you are not affecting it's well-being. Obviously you wouldn't do anything too strenuous such as cross country or galloping, though.

In terms of professionally competing a horse or pony, the usual age for retirement would be earlier because younger usually horses have better stamina, energy etc.

It all depends on the horse. If it is healthy you can ride it through its early 20's. But you should ask your vet on his opinion.
