Sexual maturity may come before the dog is quite a year old (depends on the individual), but the dog should not be bred until he is two years old and has passed basic health clearances (hips, eyes, etc.) relevant to the breed. This greatly betters your chances for healthy pups.

∙ 14y agoThe bitch (female dog) needs to be at least 2 years old before she is bred, otherwise she is not physically mature yet and there can be more complications to the birth. Make sure that she has a stud dog with a good workable personality... as the pups will take on the traits of both parents.I would also be good to talk to other breeders to ask advise and know the risk,also talk with your vet to know the cost of prenatal care and the cost of a c-section if complications arise. the last thing, the world does have hundreds of pit bulls dying across the country in shelters every day,the humane society will put any unclaimed pit or pit mix down...so make sure that if you breed your dog, sell the pups, be a responsible breeder and take any unwanted dogs back and find them a new home...AKC is a good place for more questions
