St. Peter's on the Wall is not a church but a Saxon chapel, originally built in the 7th century and subsequently adapted, repaired, rebuilt and modified over the next eight or nine hundred years, culminating in a fanciful restoration in 1920 - so what you can see today is not what was there in the 7th century.

A chapel was staffed by a chaplain, who was generally paid and supported by some wealthy nobleman to recite prayers for the nobleman and his family, both living and dead. The local small population would have attended services, but chapels were not generally licensed to perform the full range of services (marriages, baptism, burials and so on).

A church, by contrast, not only had a priest, who lived entirely on tithes and donations from his parishioners, but it could perform the full range of services and had the right of sanctuary.
