It will be quite young. After a few days the umbilical cord will harden and fall of.

However, the kitten may be a few hours old - check if it's eyes are open or not - as the mother will dry her kits as soon as they are born, by licking them.

What attaches the placenta to the baby?

As long the surfaces are clean and dry you could probably get away with a bit of double-sided sticky tape. Seriously, my grasp of biology leaves a lot to be desired but I'll try and look this up for you. Back soon. It would appear that the placenta is attached to the embryo by the umbilical cord.

What to do with the umbilical cord attached to kitten and after birth?

leave it alone don't touch the kittens (they are to fragile at birth I wouldn't touch them until they are at least a week old (unless its winter then I put them in a towel or something). Its a mother cat's nature to eat the umbilical cord and all the blood and other fluids because in the wild usually mother cats hunt, but if they have kittens they can't so they have to eat the fluids and umbilical cord.

Where is donkeys umbilical cord located?

The umbilical cord connects the navel of a fetus with the placenta. When the baby is born the umbilical cord is cut. The belly button is the location where the umbilical cord connected to the placenta.

What happens to the umbilical when the baby is born?

Soon after birth the umbilical cord is clamped about 7 to 10mm from the infant's abdomen, the cord is then cut, separating the new born from the placenta. The baby will wear a cord tie or a plastic cord clamp until the cut edge has sufficiently sealed. The remaining cord stump will continue to dry for about 7 to 10 days when it will naturally drop off, the remnant becoming one's belly button.

How should one care for her newborn's umbilical cord stump?

One should care for her newborn's umbilical cord stump by ensuring that the newborn has their basic hygiene needs met. The area where the stump is should be kept dry and clean. The baby's diaper should not be in contact with the stump so that the area isn't contaminated with bodily fluids.

What are the steps of Unbilical Cord care?

It is important to keep the stump of the umbilical cord clean and dry. If the stump appears dirty it should be washed with plain water. After cleaning, place a clean cloth around the stump and fan it dry with a piece of paper. Fold the front of the baby's diaper down to expose the stump of the cord to the air. This will help the cord dry out naturally. Give the baby sponge baths until the cord does fall off. Do not pull the stump off even if it is hanging by just a thread or two. It is best to let it fall of naturally.

Why is the umbilical cord clamped?

The umbilical cord, which connects the placenta to the baby, needs to be cut so that the baby's blood supply can be secured within the baby's body, and the now dead placenta can be disposed of.

When can you start to hold your newborn lamb?

Not until it has bonded well with its mother and its umbilical cord is dry - at about 4 to 5 days of age - as your smell may make its mother confused and not want to take the lamb back.

What age does a puppy lose it's umbilical cord?

The umbilical cord is usually chewed off by the mother dog shortly after birth. If she fails to remove it, it needs to be sanitarily clipped and tied off. The dried stump will usually fall off within a week. Don't try to remove it because it will cause bleeding. Momma dog will take care of it.

Why on earth do you have a belly button?

When a baby is growing inside its mother, it's not able to breath or eat like you do - instead, it gets its air and nutrients straight from Mom through a tube connected to its belly. This tube is called an "umbilical cord," and is where our belly buttons (also called "navels") come from. After the baby is born, a doctor will cut the umbilical cord since the baby can now breathe and eat on it's own. (Don't worry, there are no nerves in the umbilical cord so cutting it doesn't hurt the baby!) Within a few days the stump will dry up and fall off on its own, and what's left behind is the baby's very first scar: a belly button!

Can new born bath?

New born humans should have a bath. Regular bathing calms the infant and helps to lubricate skin that is getting too dry. Just be careful around the umbilical cord area so as not to prematurely break it off.
