Hello, I am a first time leopard gecko owner, so take this with a grain of salt, but I believe at about 4-5 months they had basically all the markings that they now have as adults (if not a little sooner). Mine are both about two years old now.

my leopard gecko has also stopped eating and she is pretty old too so I think this might be the case. 19 is fairly old for a leopard gecko to live.

How does the leopard gecko protect itself?

When a leopard gecko feels threatened it loses its tail. The tail still moves because it has nerve endings in it, and will distract the enemy while the leopard gecko gets away. Eventually the leopard gecko will grow a new tail but it will not be as pretty as its old tail. It will grow back in a "light bulb" shape instead of sleek and straight.
