Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution sets the minimum age of candidacy for a United States Senator at 30. The Constitution specifies two additional qualifications: 1) A Senator must have been a citizen of the United States for at least nine years; 2) he or she must be a resident of the state in which he or she is elected at the time of election.

The Senate is responsible for determining whether a Senator meets the prescribed qualifications for office. On three occasions, lack of close scrutiny resulted in members being elected before their 30th birthday: Henry Clay (age 29 in 1806); Armistead Thomas Mason (age 28 in 1816); and John Eaton (age 28 in 1818).

Our current Vice-President, Joe Biden, was elected to the Senate shortly before his 30th birthday, in 1972, but turned 30 before his swearing-in ceremony in January 1973.
