Because Thomas Edison made it PRACTICAL, by discovering a filament that would last more than a few seconds.
I'm sorry to say that he didn't In 1878 Joseph Wilson Swan, an English physicist and Chemist received a patent for his invention and his house was the first in the world to be lit by electric light. See Swan's Wikipedia entry Thomas Edison, upon seeing the British patent,or open letter, made copies and publicised his work. Swan was keen to make money from his invention and decided set up a joint venture which became the 'Ediswan' company in 1883. I am sure the name Swan would not have figured in the name unless Edison was forced to retract his claim of prior invention. Edison did produce an efficient steam driven DC dynamo known as' Long Waisted Annies' to drive his lamps and famously lit the road out side his workshop. This the likely source of your error.
Thomas Edison had a very busy life when he went to school they said to Edison get out of school because first he did not know how to study, then his mother did not give up and taught him how study and then became a genius and then finally he made electricity and became famous and became a big peson out known.

Thomas Edison was the first "industrial" inventor. He took the art of invention to new heights, and made it into a real industry. Edison's real genius lay not in invention itself, but in commercializing his inventions. He made sure that each invention would have a market, that it really was useful and desired BEFORE he invented it. He was astonishingly persistent, and kept going when others might have given up.
"Mary had a little lamb" were the first words successfully recorded by Edison when testing the phonograph. Edison made the recording in his tinfoil cylinder phonograph, the invention that made him famous in 1877.
At 16, Thomas Edison came up with his first invention. It was called an automatic repeater, and it made it so the telegraph signal could be transmitted between unmanned stations, and translated at leisure.
It is pretty much agreed that the first invention of Thomas Edison was a tin foil phonograph. The idea came to him while working to improve the efficiency of the telegraph. He noticed that if the telegraph sounds were played at a high rate of speed the sounds resembled words.
The first lightbulb was made by Thomas Alva Edison, but other electric lights were created before his invention of the lightbulb.
