John Rae went on four expeditions (1846-7, 1848-9, 1851-2 and 1853-4.) All his expeditions were successful. The first one's purpose was to map some Arctic, the second's to search for Sir John Franklin, the third to search again for Franklin and the last to do more mapping. On his last expedition he learned from the Inuit what had happened to Franklin.
