25 June 1788 ANSWER West Virginia join the Union on May 13, 1861, when a Convention composed by the delegates of 26 West Virginia's Counties met at Wheeling. The delegates unanimously declared themselves against the secession, asking to be relieved by the Union troops standing in Ohio. Furthermore, on June 1,1861, a local Convention made up of 34 Counties met at Wheeling and appointed a Governor. The Confederate opposing forces in West Virginia were decisively defeated at Philippi on June 3rd and on July 11th and 13th at Rich Mountain and Carrick's Ford thus signing the definitive separation of West Virginia from the Old Dominion.
West Virginia University's school colors are old gold and blue.
