Mexico is an overwhelmingly Catholic country, and most people celebrate Christmas. For Mexicans, the celebration begins around December 16th with the so-called posadas, which include Christmas carols, dinners, parties with music, fireworks and pinatas for children. December 25 is a national holiday.

Most homes are decorated with poinsettias, Christmas lights and garlands; some have a Nativity scene, a Christmas tree or both.

Christmas dinner usually includes baked turkey or ham, Mexican punch drink and other, more traditional dishes, such as romeritos (dried shrimp with mole sauce and potato) and bacalao a la vizcaina (mexican-style codfish stew).
