The Poor Knights of Christ as they were known were, at the heights of their power, the richest organization in the world. They were an arm of the holy Catholic Church but didn't have to share their resources with the church. They owned a very large part of what is now France. They controlled many castles in Europe and the holy land. Their Army was the largest and most capable in the world. Nobles from throughout the western world joined their ranks and gave them huge tracts of land.
The Pope abolished the order in 1307 and he issued an order (Papal Bull Vul Ex Excelsio) excommunicating anyone who became a Templar.
For information on the modern order which has been reformed in the 1800's see related links. Hope this helped.

The following are opinions from WikiAnswers contributors: * It is well known that the Knights Templar did overreach themselves, but was that through meddling or bungling? Myself, I would say meddling. They had become far too powerful and thought they could walk roughshod over everyone, but as they found to their cost, they couldn't. So the answer must be meddlers.

No Columbus was an Italian born sailor he had nothing to do with the Knights Templar
The Knights Templar were Christians. Their original purpose was to assist travelers to the Holy Land. Legend has it that they hunted for relics of Christianity in the Holy Land. They also developed the first banking systems in Europe. The institution of the Knights Templar was destroyed by one of the Kings of France and the Roman Catholic Pope because they were becoming too powerful. Also, the king of France at the time wanted to claim the riches of the Knights Templar for the French Crown. The monarchy did not have much money at the time of the Templars.
the Templar Knights have never been unmade. There are still many orders of the Knights Templar, mostly now involved in charity work, not fighting.
