It's not common but not particularly valuable either. Without seeing the coin it's not possible to know exactly, but you most likely have what's called a filled-die error. That happens when a bit of grease or other crud clogs one of the tiny recesses of a die and prevents it from forming the associated letter or number when the coin is struck.

Except for cases where a filled die obliterated a mint mark (e.g. the so-called 1922 "plain" cent) or part of the date, this error doesn't add much if anything to a coin's value.
