If I have any doubts about a long gun, I take it to a professional gunsmith, a real one, not some guy that thinks he knows guns, for a complete dis-assembly and inspection. Given a go ahead, I'd still secure it to a spare tire and rim and line and test fire a few rounds down range and then reinspect it. Other than taking them to a gunsmith, I know metals, that is what I do. Never had one blow up on me and that will save your face, literally. Modern loads are higher pressure than older guns can bear. Err on the side of caution!
yes , you can shoot snails and worms too

That can only be answered by you providing the model number of your Western Field shotgun. Most shotguns will be marked on the barrel for the length of shotgun shell the chamber can handle.
A shotgun can shoot up to 80 yards it it depends on what the choke is on the gun.
a 12 gauge shotgun can shoot about 30 yards accuracy
No
Pellets or slugs. shotguns usually shoot shot or pellets, but you can shoot slugs. in Indiana we use a shotgun to hunt deer and use shotgun slugs, better to use a barrel with no choke in it. cylinder bore preferred.
I would advis you to have a competent gunsmith look your shotgun over first to see if it will fire safely. He can also advise you as to the length of chamber you have.I would only shoot the low brass shells in this shotgun.
The montgomery wards(western field) model 31A was made by mossberg. There was 2 model designations for this shotgun, either the mossberg model 40,or the model 44.The model 40 was made from 1933-1935.The model 44 had a heavier target stock and was made from 1934-1935.Both would shoot 22 S,L,or long rifle ammo.
aim and fire Another answer: You do not aim a shotgun, you point a shotgun. You shoot where the target will be when the shot gets there, not where the target is when you pull the trigger. That is called "windage."
With a hopgun Not a shotgun a hopgun
