That's largely a matter of opinion, but one opinion gaining a lot of popularity is a natural or "pack" method, such as is popularized by Cesar Milan.

This concentrates on using methods and doing the dog will naturally understand and respond to, rather than using "human" methods to train the dog.

In my experience, "treat training" - giving a food reward for behavior - turns dogs into hungry little robots, and "trauma training" is just inexcusable animal abuse.

One of the best books I've seen on natural training is one I read over twenty years ago, "Mother Knows Best" by Carol Lea Benjamin.

Use dog treats simple commands such as:Sit,Lay Down,Roll Over,Play Dead,Come, High 5,Fetch, Bring Me The Leash,Bring Me My Purse and much much more. Hand commands work too! You could tell them that it will be fun too!

Improved Answer...well potty training is more important than tricks. One excellant way of potty training is called kennel training. but in order to do this you will need a kennel/crate (also called a dog/pet carrier). Treats will come in handy also ( preferably dog treats not human food! but if you run out of treats cheese isn't really bad for dogs, just not too much though:) Most people have their dogs go potty outside ( like when you take your dog for a walk) others like to use potty mats/newspaper.i recommend training your dog to potty outside and use the potty mats for when your dog is at home byhimelf and needs to potty. potty mats are easier to clean up than newspaper (you can find potty mats at Walmart..petko..and petsmart..and walgreens).

The reason you use a kennel is because the kennel should be considered their bed. dogs usually dont potty in the same place that they sleep. its not a punishment to put them in the kennel. if you leave the house for a littlewhile and want to leave them at home its ok for you to leave them in the kennel.

After Reading these steps see tips below!

1. first after your dog wakes up, eats/drinks, or plays take him/her outside( or in a closed off room, preferably no carpet,this is where his/her potty mats will be)

2. stay with them in the area that they should be going potty at until they go potty. this takes a lot of patience but soon the puppy will get bored and will go potty. after they go potty praise them by giving them hugs kisses and treats( remember a dogs mouth is cleaner than a humans;)

3. once they go potty bring them to their kennel. remember that the kennel shouldn't be a punishment ever! the kennel is a place where the dog can rest in a quiet place.( maybe put a few toy in the kennel)

4. leave them in their kennel for at least a half an hour. if you couldn't get them to potty before you put them in, now would be a good time to try again. you can aslo take them out to playagain. (if you come back later to check on them when they are in the kennel and they are sleeping dont take them out till they wake up)

This process is important not only to train them but so you can enjoy having your dog in your house.

TIPS:

• when buying potty mats think about the size you will need based on hte size of your dog.
• when buying a crate/kennel it shouldn't be big enough for them to walk around in- this gives them room to potty in the crate :( the crate should be big enough only so they can sit up and turn around to get comfortable
• when you first show the crate to your puppy DONT PUT THEM IN THE CRATE..let them explore for themselves. put their favorite treats inside. once they are inside snacking on the treats, DO NOT close the door on the crate( do this a cupple of times then after a day or two of doing this close the door but dont lock it)
• when you get a kennel grab some old blankets to put on the bottom of the kennel so they have some padding to sleep on.
• if the dogs crys right after you lock them in the crate dont yell at them, bang or kick the crate to shut them up- just walk out of the room, close the door and ignore them.( it may seem cruel but I've read a lot of dog books on how to train them and this is a lot more effective than yelling)
• before you put the dog in the crate pet them and give them lots of love so they know its ok to be in the crate.
• after the dog goes potty where its supposed to go give it 1 treat and lots of love :)

Dogs depend on humans like wolves depend on their "pack". they look up to us to help them. adopting a dog is your way of saying that you will care for them and guide them. you will find that dogs truly are mans best friend.
