The first priority for a teacher is good class control, which has to be earned. Pupils soon know whether a teacher is very good at the job. Control is bought gradually by having an excellent knowledge of whatever is to be taught, by being cheerful and willing to take a joke, by always praising good work, by never being sarcastic (a guaranteed way to lose the will of a pupil for ever). Other ways are: to become involved with the pupils during their free time; for example joining a football practice during lunchtime or after school; by taking pupils out during holidays (a simple walk and picnic will earn lots of, "Thank you, sir/miss."
