Just coming out with the question might seem a little too pushy, and the person is really on the spot. "No" sounds harsh, so the person may feel pressured. Maybe something like "Would it be ok if I call you?" At least that gives the person some wiggle room. "That might not work-- my parents-- or my roommate-- etc". On the other hand, the person might say sure! So after a couple of moments of awkward silence, a humorous "...well, we'll need to exchange numbers for that..." will seem natural.
