You should sit at a minimum of 10 inches from the airbag.
Due to airbag considerations a rear-facing infant seat is absolutely NOT safe. A booster seat and child is fine. Airbag cannot be disabled
The light come on when the system detects a problem and sets a trouble code. You should have it diagnosed by a trained technician. The airbag system is not for do it yourselfers.
If there is not a specific keyed switch to do this installed in your vehicle YOU SHOULD NOT TAMPER WITH YOUR AIRBAG! If you are removing the airbag assembly you should ensure that the battery is disconnected and there is no power of any kind running to the electrical system of the vehicle. The consequences of jerking around with an airbag could be fatal. TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALER!
To remove an airbag from the steering wheel of a Corolla first make sure that the airbag system is disabled. Undo the two Tork screws on either side of the wheel. Once this is removed the connector for the airbag should be visible. Push the clip towards to horn pad and it should come out.

My mechanic says it is to indicate there is a problem with the airbag system. The airbag is like a small bomb in a vehicle and the airbag system should operate correctly when it is needed, so I think the repair of this should be done by qualified persons.
