They were the pioneering civilisations in their area - Mesopotamia, Central America and the Levant.
The Mayas were a warlike race. But were always fighting each other constantly. Conquering another continent would have to mean the Mayas would cease fighting and unite together to accomplish that. They also probably didn't have any political reason to take over another continent, considering they were very religious.
