∙ 14y agoIn one method, the raw opium is boiled in water. If ash (yenchee) from previous smoking sessions has collected inside the bowl of a pipe, it is scraped out with a special tool and added to the opium water. After a while, the opium water is filtered through a cheesecloth to remove impurities.
This is boiled down further to a syrup or paste, called chendo. If the climate allows the chendo to remain liquid, a pin called a salai (sharpened bicycle spokes are often used) is dipped into the chendo. It is then twirled over a flame produced by an oil lamp covered by a chimney - often a bottle with the bottom cut off. This is the bathi. The chendo bubbles, and it is twirled against the pipe face until it is compressed. Then it is dipped again, and twirled over the flame again, until a suitable-sized ball - a chitta - is formed. Heat control is essential, as it is easy to burn the chitta too much.
In cool dry climates, the chendo can be in the form of a bit of toothpaste, and each chitta is stuck on the salai at one shot, then twirled and reduced for smoking.
The chitta is shaped over the hot chimney, and while it is properly soft, the salai is stuck through the hole in the pipe face, twirled a bit, and removed. The chitta is left on the pipe, with a hole in the middle from the salai.
The pipe is held upside down over the bathi, the handle passed by the bathi-wala to the smoker, who inhales the bubbling chitta as it is guided over the bathi by the bathi-wala.
