Basically, if you could wear contacts before LASIK you can wear them afterwards if needed. There are some people who have LASIK because they cannot wear contacts and this is not necessarily going to be helped by LASIK. Also, some people who wear hard or gas permeable contact lenses are not able to wear them as well because the "dome" of the cornea is changed and the lenses will not center well. Finally, if there is some irregular astigmatism caused by the LASIK which is rare, then soft contact lenses will not fully restore the vision. For most people who have LASIK, they are able to go back to contact lens wear if needed after the healing period is completed.

You should wait at least six months after your corneal flap will completely adhere to the surface of the eye. The vast majority of patients do not need to wear contact lenses after Lasik. There are some conditions where contacts may be helpful or favourable after laser vision correction procedure. In Conclusion, if you could use contacts comfortably before procedure, it will not be a problem for you to use them again after Lasik.

You will have to wait until you can wear your contacts after the surgery. I'll be honest- it is extremely painful. You won't even want to contemplate putting anything in your eyes for awhile. Your doctor will give you the thumbs up when your eyes are ready. But, at the end of the day, you will eventually be able to wear your contacts again.

Your eye surgeons advice is the law on that. It's too risky - this is your eyes we're talking about! - to do it any other way.

How do you know when cataract surgery is needed?

It used to be "when they are ripe", but with medical technology you can now have cataracts removed as soon as your opthamologist sees the signs of a cataract forming. I've had cataracts removed off both eyes. It was a snap for me, but meticulous work for the surgeon. You go in as an out-patient (can remain in street clothes) and given an IV drip of Valium and 40 mins. later you are sitting in a wheel chair fully awake, feeling good, being given coffee or tea, a muffin and your vitals taken for 20 minutes, then sent home. I got home and made dinner and felt great. BETTER ANSWER It is true cataracts can be removed straight away, but you don't get given 'Valium' and if you were given Valium, you shouldn't have been making tea when you got home. its very dangerous. My anesthesiologist came out and talked to me before surgery and told me it was Valium drip! The anesthesiologist is well versed on how much anesthetic to give and told me I could go about my daily routine, but should not bend over for a week (which would put pressure behind my eyes.) I listen to the pros.

What is pseudophakic?

When an eye is pseudophakic, the natural lens has been surgically removed and replaced by an artificial lens - an implant. These days the implant procedure is undertaken as soon as the opaque lens (cataract) is removed. Before this combined procedure became widely popular, with the introduction of artificial lenses, the natural lens was removed and the vision was corrected with spectacles and contact lenses- the eye being known as aphakic. *Please read senile cataracts, traumatic cataracts and congenital cataracts.

Get Help From Vision Center. Before getting contact lens, your optometrist is suppose to teach you how to put them on properly and how to rinse and store them. Once after they teach you if you still can't get them to go in your eyes, then continue trying. Practice makes perfect and pretty soon it will be second nature to you

How soon after cataract surgery might complications appear?

Cataract surgery does include risks of retinal problems. Despite this, the procedure is considered extremely safe. Following are the most commonly seen retinal issues after cataract surgery. The most commonly encountered retinal issue after cataract surgery is macular edema (also known as Irvine-Gass syndrome). Although this can happen to anyone, it is more commonly seen among those who have a condition known as an epiretinal membrane (or "Cellophane Maculopathy"), diabetes, or whose capsule ruptured during cataract surgery. Sometimes the condition will resolve on its own though the treatment of this condition often includes use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well as topical steroids. Occasionally, an injection is given in the eye to resolve the macular swelling. Less common, but more feared is retinal detachment. The retina can spontaneously detach from the back of the eye months to years after a successful cataract surgery. Even though the risk is small (1% to 2%), patients can have substantially and permanently reduced vision with retinal detachment if it is not urgently and successfully treated. Therefore, it is important to report floaters, light flashes and a curtain-like vision loss to the eye surgeon within 24 hours of onset of symptoms so immediate management may be rendered. People who are near-sighted (even if they had prior LASIK) are at a higher risk of retinal detachment. Even less common is light toxicity from the microscope illumination system. With modern cataract surgery often taking less than 20 minutes this is now a very rare occurrence.

Who is Fred hollows and what did he do?

Professor Fred Hollows was an Australian Ophthalmologist who believed in a world where no-one was needles.sly blind. Seventy five per cent of all bli.ndnes.s in the world is avoidable. Ninety per cent of these people live in developing countries where access to eye health services is often lacking a.nd wher.e even .a relatively inexpensive cataract operation (that can cost as little as $25 according to The Fred Hollows Foundation) is out of financial reach. . Fred Hollows did many great things, but among the most important was the develop.ment of low cost intraocular lens laboratories in Nepal and Eritrea. An IOL (the lens i.nserted during cataract. surgery) used to cost hundreds of dollars to manufacture, pushing cataract surgery beyond the reach of most in the developing world. The laboratories that Fred began now manufacture lenses for around $5-8US each, significantly lowering the cost of surgery. Over 3 million lenses have been manufactured and exported to around 40 countries. Fred Hollows was given the Australian of the Year award in 1990. In 1993 he died of cancer not before travelling to countries such as Vietnam and Nepal to train doctors. He was a very special human being. He dedicated his life to save others lives and sights. Fred Hollows left behind a legacy nobody will soon forget.
