Depends on the occassion. At least two weeks for most things. Weddings or Family reunions, especially with out of town guests, a MINIMUM of two months in advance, and more if foreign guests or people you know are very stingently committed at work. For these people, an advance note that a formal invitation is forthcoming may be in order.

* Six weeks to a month is a good time to send out invitations. If it's a wedding it's better to send the invitations three months in advance so family and friends can work their holidays or time off around the wedding.

Idealy, you should send out your invitations about six weeks before your wedding. This will give your guests time to prepare for the wedding. You can also send save-the-dates before your wedding invitations.
