Sperm are sex cell( gametes is the posh word), and they are formed by a process called meiosis which is essentially mitosis ( the multiplication of somatic cells) with another division stuck on the end. First the centrioles double and move to the poles of the cell, causing the DNA to double, the DNA lines up at the equator of the cell and is pulled apart by spindle fibres, this makes 2 new cells and that's mitosis, but I'm not done. The2 new cells then split to form 4 new cells with half the number of original chromosomes, this is called the haploid number, the diploid number is the full set of chromosomes. The human haploid number is 23 and the diploid number is 46
