The United Nations is a highly successful institution and in ares where it has failed it has been more often than not because of interference by countries like the United States and former Soviet Union, who wanted to secure their own interests; instead of looking out for the greater good of the people of the World. It is not in the interest of the United States to leave the United Nations, as that would only reduce their influence in the world; to the benefit of their rival nations.
UN was never successful in this regard although they did broker a number of armistices. However, the UN has been successful at maintaining the armistice between Syria and Israel since the Arab-Israeli War of 1973.
