Yes he was. But I still cannot find, apart from a grudging respect of his generalship, any way of liking him as a man. And I suspect that Cromwell doesn't care about that in the slightest, and why would he ?
Cromwell was a fine commander and had the confidence of the troops he commanded. Also he was a fine orator in the House of Parliament. Well, that's the good points. If we mention Drogheda & Wexford I suppose we go off message !
Cromwell was a genius that established the first professional British army. He was a scholar of roman and classical history and an admirer of democracy. However he was also very much a man of his time. Rome's church was seen as being corrupt and an evil influence. He was surprisingly tolerant of many who disagreed with him unless they were what were "papists". He seems to have been a fair minded man placed in an increasingly difficult position by a head strong and stubborn king. He is remembered mostly for his alleged atrocities in Ireland but it is important to remember that he always operated within the rules of was as they existed in the 17th century. Any other military leader would likely have made the same decisions in similar circumstances.
