The Speenhamland system was not successful as the overseers were not payed and so some turned corrupt and took money that was supposed to go to the poor, the Speenhamland system was one of the woThe overseers were not payed and so some turnes corrupt and took money that was supposed to go to the poor, the speenhamland system was one of the worst things within the poor law because the price of bread would go up because the farmers need to pay tax meaning that more money would have to be given to the poor to buy bread increasing the tax by a lot returning to the problem with the farmer paying taxes and happening all over again.the speenhamland system encouraged idolness as if you didnt have enough money to buy the bread you would get a top up, this also implied cheap labour meaning that if you were paying a poor person you could pay them what you want knowing that they will get a top up and still be able to buy bread. Because this system was based on the price of bread and the size of your family it encouraged younger marriages and children, growing the population of the poor hence increasing the amount of tax needed to give all those people enough money to buy bread.
