Basically, a super computer has a far larger processing speed and short-term memory than a normal computer. This enables it to do the same jobs in far less time, or to manipulate extremely large numbers with ease.

  • A supercomputer is highly optimized for massive mathematical problems. A normal computer isn't, it is more of a generalist.
  • A supercomputer is normally defined as any computer having at least 10 times the performance of the highest performance computer available on the normal computing market in the same time period.
  • A supercomputer typically has much more RAM and disk (or magnetic tape) capacity than a normal computer to maintain the very large datasets needed for its massive mathematical problems. These disk (or tape) systems typically are custom designed high performance systems to minimize wasted CPU time when switching between parts of the dataset.
  • A supercomputer accordingly usually costs far more than a normal computer.
  • etc.

Is a super computer a personel computer?

No, "super computers" are so-called because of their capacity to perform enormous amounts of calculations which would exceed by far the demands of a normal computer or user. A fraction of a super computer's power would be more than enough to run any application that a normal user could dream of, so there would be no point in using it for normal purposes. It's kind of like having a car with a 3,000 horsepower jet engine on it- you really can't even use 1,000 horsepower for any normal driving so what would you do with even more?
